Day 1

This itinerary is accessible from all Gateways, but assumes commencement from Launceston.

Collecting your car from the airport, travel North on B41 and then Highway 1 to your selected accommodation in Launceston.

Morning Arrival - After checking in, travel from Launceston on A7 North as far as required, perhaps calling in at Tamar Island Wetlands Walk, the Grindelwald Swiss Village (West (left) off A7 just North of Legana), the Strathlynn Winery on C733 East (North of Legana), and St Matthias Vineyard (just past Strathlynn). Also on C733 is the historic Rosevears Hotel, the “Rebecca” Monument and Waterbird Haven. On C728 which turns East (right) off A7 South of Exeter, you will find the Supply River Flour Mills ruins, and Marions Vineyard - the road re-enters B73 at the Batman Bridge. Here you have two alternatives...

(1) Turn East (right) on B73 to cross the Tamar River at the Batman Bridge to A8. Then, turn North (left) and follow A8 North to George Town and Low Head for a visit to the Pilot Station and Low Head Lighthouse - then return South on A8 to Launceston.

(2) Turn West (left) and return to A7 North (right) to Beaconsfield, then continue on A7 to Beauty Point where you may visit “Seahorse World” (restaurant available here). Then return South on A7 to Launceston - if time allows inspect the Grubb Shaft Museum at Beaconsfield.

Day 2

A 15-minute drive north-east of Launceston is Hollybank Treetops Adventure, Tasmania’s newest adrenalin attraction, offering thrill seekers the chance to fly above the forest floor.

Return to Launceston and continue on the A3 East via the “Targa” route through Nunamara and Targa, and then through The Sidelings Range to Scottsdale, regarded as the hub of the North-East and servicing some of the richest agricultural and forest country in the state. Continue on A3 East to St Helens (Innkeepers Hotels and Innkeepers Intimate Retreats), noting on the way the opportunities for short but interesting walks at Cuckoo Falls, the Derby Tin Mine and Museum, the famous Weldborough Hotel, Pyengana Cheese Factory, Pub in the Paddock and St Columba Falls.

After St Helens, travel South on A3 through Scamander, Four Mile Creek and Bicheno (Innkeepers Apartments). Take C302 South (left) for a short exploration of Freycinet National Park. Join a Freycinet Adventures kayak trip or visit Wineglass Bay in style on a Freycinet Sea Cruise. Return on C302 North and take A3 South (left) to Swansea (Innkeepers Hotels, Innkeepers Apartments, Innkeepers Discovery Inns and Innkeepers Intimate Retreats).

Overnight on the East Coast at your choice of accommodation.

Day 3

If overnight at St Helens or Bicheno continue on to Swansea via A3 South. If overnight at Swansea, you may like to visit the Bark Mill and Wine & Wool Centre, located on the Western (right) side of the road. Continue South on A3, enjoying magnificent coastal scenery en route and stopping to view the convict-built Spiky Bridge some 5 kms South on the Western (right) side of the road. Travel through Triabunna and Orford.

Continue South on A3 and visit Buckland’s famous St John The Baptist Church with its beautiful stained glass window depicting the life of St John. Continue on A3 to Sorell and then take A9 East to Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula.

The Port Arthur Historic Site, symbol of Australia’s convict heritage, provides the opportunity to explore the prison ruins, beautiful gardens, restored homes and museums.

Cruise along the spectacular coastline of the Tasman National Park, between Eaglehawk Neck and Port Arthur on a 3 hour eco-cruise with Tasman Island Cruises.

For a fun evening, take the Historic Ghost Tour of the ruins.

The Saltwater River convict coal mines also provide interesting insights into the past. A visit to these is gained by travelling West, North and East on B37, and taking C341 North (left) and West from Premaydena to Saltwater River. After inspection, return South and East to B37 East (left) via Koonya, then South (right) again on A9 to Port Arthur. Overnight at Port Arthur (Innkeepers Apartments, Innkeepers Premium Apartments and Innkeepers Discovery Inns).

Day 4

Depart Port Arthur, travelling North on A9 to Taranna where you should visit the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park and come face to face with Tasmanian Devils.

Then travel North on A9 to Sorell, then straight ahead North on A3 to C351 West (left) to Richmond, where historic treasures include Australia’s oldest bridge, oldest Catholic Church and a perfectly preserved colonial gaol. There are also plenty of craft shops, stores and tea rooms to explore. Then travel South by B31 to Cambridge and follow the signs for A3 West and on into Hobart.

Hobart provides a wealth of historical experiences with National Trust homes, guided walks around Battery Point and Salamanca, and many old buildings and churches to explore. Of particular interest is the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery on the corner of Davey and Argyle Sts.

Day 5

Leave Hobart travelling North on Highway 1 towards Granton for approximately 11 km. Watch for the sign on the Southern (left) side of the highway, indicating the turn-off to Moorilla Winery. Visit the winery and Museum and then return to Highway 1. Continue North on Highway 1 to Oatlands (just off Highway 1) to visit the craft centres and the Callington Mill. Having stopped in Oatlands, return to Highway 1 and continue North to inspect the unique working village of Ross where you can walk across the famous Ross Bridge (Circa 1836) and visit the Tasmanian Wool Centre. Then, continue North on Highway 1 to Launceston for your final overnight stay.

Day 6

Departure day - if time permits, take the opportunity to do some shopping in Launceston. There are many quality gift and souvenir shops together with several high-fashion shops for the ladies.

Day 1

Collecting your car from the airport, proceed North to A3 then West (left) into Hobart. Day 2

Depart Hobart on Highway 1 North to Granton, then straight ahead West on A10 through the historic village of New Norfolk. A stop at Hamilton, famous for its craft centres is suggested. Visit Tarraleah Village, an old Hydro town which boast gorgeous art deco cottage accommodation, hotel rooms and a 5 star Lodge. There is also a cafe, highland pub and convenience store for snack supplies. Proceed on to Derwent Bridge and take C193 North (right) to Lake St Clair. Just prior to Lake St Clair we recommend a visit to the Wall in the Wilderness. The Wall in the Wilderness is artist, Greg Duncan’s commemoration of those who helped shape the past and present of Tasmania’s central highlands.

A work in progress, The Wall is being carved from three-metre high wooden panels. The carved panels will tell the history of the harsh Central Highlands region - beginning with the indigenous people, then to the pioneering timber harvesters, pastoralists, miners and Hydro workers

The Visitors Centre, features a well-stocked café and take a stroll around the lake shores. Return South to A10 and continue West (right) into Queenstown. On the way, about 21kms East of Queenstown, stop for a short walk (20 minutes) on the Nelson Falls nature trail on the Northern (right) side of the highway - a very simple and level walk to experience the ferns and trees that are typical of the World Heritage Area. You will pass through Queenstown (famous for its copper mining and denuded “lunar” landscape, and home of the West Coast Wilderness Railway) where you could overnight (Innkeepers Hotels and Innkeepers Discovery Inns properties), or you may wish to continue 3km on A10 to B24 West (left) for 37km to Strahan for your overnight stay (Innkeepers Apartments, Innkeepers Hotels, Innkeepers Premium Apartments and Innkeepers Intimate Retreats). Alternatively, you may wish to continue on to Tullah for overnight accommodation (Innkeepers Discovery Inns property). From Queenstown, travel North on the A10 approximately 63kms through Rosebery to reach Tullah. As an alternative route, consider diverting off A10 on to B28 for a scenic drive via Lake Plimsoll.

Day 3

If you are staying at Queenstown, travel North on A10 for 3km to B24 West (left) for 37km to Strahan Wharf. If staying in Tullah, travel South on A10 through Rosebery and on through Zeehan, proceeding via B27 for 46kms to the Strahan Wharf.

From the wharf at Strahan, take a trip down the Gordon River aboard World Heritage Cruises. The cruises leave early in the morning and take you to the heart of the World Heritage Area, giving you the opportunity to leave the boat for a short walk at Heritage Landing. Return to the wharf via Hell’s Gates or Sarah Island.

On your return, collect your car and head North on B27 to C249 West to Zeehan - here, you may wish to visit the West Coast Pioneers’ Memorial Museum. Then, return East on C249 joining B27 to A10. Take A10 North (left) through Renison and Rosebery, then continue on A10 North to B18 North through Hampshire. A few kilometres after Ridgley, watch for C112 on the East (right) side of road and take this to Highway 1 for an opportunity to visit the Lactos Cheese Factory prior to joining Highway 1. Overnight on the North Coast, where your accommodation options include Burnie (Innkeepers Hotels) and Ulverstone (Innkeepers Discovery Inns).

For Burnie - turn West (left) into Burnie.

For Ulverstone - turn East (right) and take the Ulverstone turn-off sign on the Northern (left) side of the road.

Day 4

Return to Highway 1 and travel East towards Devonport - watch for B19 South on the right of the road to Forth. Then on the Southern edge of town, take C132 South (right) through Lower Wilmot, Wilmot, and Moina. Travel a further 19km South and West to a T-junction and turn-off South (left) to Cradle Mountain. After exploring the Cradle Mountain Visitors Centre and Dove Lake, travel North on C132 to the T-junction, continuing East (right) to Moina on C132 to C136 East (right) to Sheffield (the town of murals). Take B14 East (right) from Sheffield to C156 East and straight ahead to B13 and Kimberley. This entire area has excellent views of Mount Roland and the Great Western Tiers. Upon reaching B13, follow it South (right) to Elizabeth Town on Highway 1 - then proceed East (right) on Highway 1 to Launceston for your overnight stay.

Day 5

Prior to your departure in the morning from Launceston, a trip to the Cataract Gorge is suggested. If you prefer to view Launceston from the river we do recommend Tamar River Cruises departing from Home Point near to the city.

The Gorge is close to the city and may be crossed on a swinging bridge by chairlift, or by foot across an old ford. There are plenty of trails and lookouts - the Duck Reach Trail meanders through almost untouched landscape close to the remains of the Duck River Power Station, Australia’s first municipal hydro-electric power station.

After exploring the Gorge (it would be now approximately lunchtime), head South on Highway 1 to Hobart. Approximately 7km past Perth on right hand side of road is C521 which will take you to “Woolmers Estate”, spanning six generations of the one family and untouched since 1845. A restaurant is available for lunch and teas.

After visiting Woolmers, return to C521 East (left) to Highway 1 South (right) and call in to the unique working village of Ross where you can walk across the famous Ross Bridge (Circa 1836) and visit the Tasmanian Wool Centre. Then, by crossing the Ross Bridge, continue South (left) on Highway 1 to Oatlands, visiting the many craft centres and the Callington Mill, then on to your last night’s accommodation in Hobart.

Day 4

Today, why not embark on one of the following day trips from Hobart...

Hobart - New Norfolk - Mt Field National Park (Russell Falls) From Hobart, take Highway 1 North to A10 West via New Norfolk. Then, take B62 West (right out of New Norfolk) past the Salmon Ponds and continue West at Bushy Park on B61 to C609 North (right) into Mt Field National Park. On your return, take B61 East (left) to Bushy Park, then North via Macquarie Plains to A10. Follow A10 South (right) to return to Hobart.

Hobart - Moorilla Winery - Bonorong Wildlife Park - Richmond
Leave Hobart travelling North on Highway 1 towards Brighton. Watch for the sign on the Southern (left) side of the highway, approximately 11kms out of Hobart, indicating the turn-off to Moorilla Winery. After visiting the winery and Museum, return to Highway 1 (North). Continue North on Highway 1 to Brighton. Take C321 East (right) and follow the signs to Bonorong Wildlife Park on C325 South. After your visit, return to C321 East (right) - follow to C322 East (right) and travel to Richmond. You may wish to visit the Richmond Gaol, Richmond Maze, the Wine Centre and the numerous craft shops in this historic village. Return to Hobart on B31 South to Cambridge - follow the signs to Hobart via A3. 

Hobart - Huonville – Tahune Airwalk - Cygnet - Margate
Leave Hobart following the Southern Outlet (A6) past Kingston and Huonville, travel alongside the Huon River through Franklin, and Port Huon to Geeveston where you take the C631 west to the Tahune Airwalk.

Allow 40 minutes to reach the Airwalk, and then take your time exploring in the temperate rainforest. After lunch return to Huonville and take the B68 (right) and travel south east through Cygnet, Kettering, Snug and Margate, re-joining the A6 North to Hobart. The entire area abounds with craft centres, wineries etc., and there are many interesting diversions possible.

Or... You may wish to explore the historical side of Hobart including the many antique stores in Battery Point, Salamanca Place and leave time to visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Follow Highway 1 East to B15 South (right) for approximately 20km to Upper Castra - take C133 East (left) to C132 South (right) via Wilmot and Moina, then travel another 19 km to the T-junction where C132 heads South (left) to Cradle Mountain.

OPTION: Overnight at Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village (Innkeepers Apartments or Premium Apartments)

Be sure to explore the mysterious world of the Tasmanian devil at the unique alpine conservation park located just 500 metres from the entrance to Cradle Mountain National Park. Devils@Cradle provides a close up encounter while learning about these amazing animals from the comfort of the visitor centre or wandering through the park with a guide. Open daily with feeding tours each night.

If choosing to visit Cradle mountain for a day visit only after exploring the Cradle Mountain Visitors Centre and Dove Lake, travel North on C132 continuing East (right) on C132 to Moina, to C136 East (right) to Sheffield (the town of murals). Day 8

In the morning prior to your departure, you may wish to visit the Cataract Gorge. Close to the city, the Gorge may be crossed on a swinging bridge (Alexandra Suspension Bridge), by chairlift, or by foot across an old ford.

If you prefer to view Launceston from the river we do recommend Tamar River Cruises operators of a number of scheduled tours throughout the year.

Depending on time available, you may have a chance to do any last minute shopping before travelling to the airport for your flight home.
