Day 1…

This itinerary is accessible from all Gateways, but assumes commencement from Launceston.

Collecting your car from the airport, travel North on B41 and then Highway 1 to your selected accommodation in Launceston.

Morning Arrival - After checking in, travel from Launceston on A7 North as far as required, perhaps calling in at Tamar Island Wetlands Walk, the Grindelwald Swiss Village (West (left) off A7 just North of Legana), the Strathlynn Winery on C733 East (North of Legana), and St Matthias Vineyard (just past Strathlynn). Also on C733 is the historic Rosevears Hotel, the "Rebecca" Monument and Waterbird Haven. On C728 which turns East (right) off A7 South of Exeter, you will find the Supply River Flour Mills ruins, and Marions Vineyard - the road re-enters B73 at the Batman Bridge. Here you have two alternatives…

(1) Turn East (right) on B73 to cross the Tamar River at the Batman Bridge to A8. Then, turn North (left) and follow A8 North to George Town and Low Head for a visit to the Pilot Station and Low Head Lighthouse - then return South on A8 to Launceston.

(2) Turn West (left) and return to A7 North (right) to Beaconsfield, then continue on A7 to Beauty Point where you may visit "Seahorse World" (restaurant available here). Then return South on A7 to Launceston - if time allows inspect the Grubb Shaft Museum at Beaconsfield.

Afternoon Arrival - After checking in, you may wish to visit Penny Royal World in Paterson Street. Then, return on Paterson Street to Margaret Street - turn right into Margaret Street and right again into York Street and follow the signs to the "Cataract Gorge First Basin" where you can take a chairlift ride across to the tearooms and gardens. Return on the chairlift and drive back to your accommodation.

Day 2…

Take the A3 East via the "Targa" route through Nunamara and Targa, and then through The Sidelings Range to Scottsdale, regarded as the hub of the North-East and servicing some of the richest agricultural and forest country in the state. Continue on A3 East to St Helens (Innkeepers Hotels and Innkeepers Intimate Retreats), noting on the way the opportunities for short but interesting walks at Cuckoo Falls, the Derby Tin Mine and Museum, the famous Weldborough Hotel, Pyengana Cheese Factory, Pub in the Paddock and St Columba Falls.

After St Helens, travel South on A3 through Scamander, Four Mile Creek and Bicheno (Innkeepers Apartments). Take C302 South (left) for a short exploration of Freycinet National Park. Return on C302 North and take A3 South (left) to Swansea (Innkeepers Hotels, Innkeepers Apartments, Innkeepers Discovery Inns and Innkeepers Intimate Retreats).

Overnight on the East Coast at your choice of accommodation.
Itinerary Route - Day 2

Day 3…

If overnight at St Helens or Bicheno continue on to Swansea via A3 South. If overnight at Swansea, you may like to visit the Bark Mill and Wine & Wool Centre, located on the Western (right) side of the road. Continue South on A3, enjoying magnificent coastal scenery en route and stopping to view the convict-built Spiky Bridge some 5 kms South on the Western (right) side of the road. Travel through Triabunna and Orford.

Continue South on A3 and visit Buckland's famous St John The Baptist Church with its beautiful stained glass window depicting the life of St John. Continue on A3 to Sorell and then take A9 East to Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula.

The Port Arthur Historic Site, symbol of Australia's convict heritage, provides the opportunity to explore the prison ruins, beautiful gardens, restored homes and museums.

A popular attraction worthy of a visit is the Bush Mill (on the left hand side of the road).

For a fun evening, take the Historic Ghost Tour of the ruins.

The Saltwater River convict coal mines also provide interesting insights into the past. A visit to these is gained by travelling West, North and East on B37, and taking C341 North (left) and West from Premaydena to Saltwater River. After inspection, return South and East to B37 East (left) via Koonya, then South (right) again on A9 to Port Arthur. Overnight at Port Arthur (Innkeepers Apartments and Innkeepers Discovery Inns).

Day 4…

Depart Port Arthur, travelling North on A9 to Taranna. Then travel North on A9 to Sorell, then straight ahead North on A3 to C351 West (left) to Richmond, where historic treasures include Australia's oldest bridge, oldest Catholic Church and a perfectly preserved colonial gaol. There are also plenty of craft shops, stores and tea rooms to explore. Then travel South by B31 to Cambridge and follow the signs for A3 West and on into Hobart.

Hobart provides a wealth of historical experiences with National Trust homes, guided walks around Battery Point and Salamanca, and many old buildings and churches to explore. Of particular interest is the restored Gasworks Village at No. 2 Macquarie Street. Overnight in Hobart - choose from the following accommodation options:

Day 5…

Leave Hobart travelling North on Highway 1 towards Granton for approximately 11 km. Watch for the sign on the Southern (left) side of the highway, indicating the turn-off to Moorilla Winery. Visit the winery and Museum and then return to Highway 1. Continue North on Highway 1 to Oatlands (just off Highway 1) to visit the craft centres and the Callington Mill. Having stopped in Oatlands, return to Highway 1 and continue North to inspect the unique working village of Ross where you can walk across the famous Ross Bridge (Circa 1836) and visit the Tasmanian Wool Centre. Then, continue North on Highway 1 to Launceston for your final overnight stay.
