At the end of a day of exploring Tasmania’s West Coast, there’s nothing better than recounting the highlights with a stunning view of Macquarie Harbour and a glass of Tassie’s finest in your hand.
Open daily, View 42° Restaurant & Bar at Strahan Village offers hilltop dining with a view over the Strahan Esplanade and the expanse of Macquarie Harbour. View 42° Restaurant & Bar is open for dinner but we like to think that after a day of touring, you have earned a tipple with a view and this is a great spot to ring in ‘drinks time’. The bar offers self-guided wine and whisky tastings, served with tasting notes and of course some extra explanation from your restaurant server if you wish. Whisky and wine tastings are available from 3:00 PM daily.
The Tasmanian whisky tasting features four Hellyer Road whiskies, served with notes to explain the subtleties of each. Start with a lighter ‘original’ whisky and move to Hellyer Road’s 10 year aged whisky, pinot barrel-aged whisky and finally a peated single malt for a smoky crescendo.
Your wine tasting at View 42° includes five Tasmanian wines, from the award-winning Josef Chromy, located at Relbia to the south east of Launceston. Like the whisky tasting, self-guided notes take you through the wines, step by step. Start with a Tasmanian sparkling to get the ball rolling, before progressing to pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc as your taste of Tasmanian white wines. Next on the list is the Josef Chromy pinot noir and to finish the tasting, a glass of the ‘Ruby’ pinot noir port.
Tastings aren’t much fun on an empty stomach though are they? Take a look at the View 42° Restaurant & Bar tasting platter menu to sample some delicious locally made and regional fare. There is a platter to suit all tastes but the ‘Piners & Miners’ platter is a favourite, with all the nourishment and flavour you want after a big day on the road in Tasmania.
Whether you’re staying at Strahan Village, at another accommodation property in Strahan or simply passing through, it’s worth taking a little detour to the top of the hill to take in the view of the Strahan Esplanade and Macquarie Harbour. And if you have time, why not kick back, enjoy a drink and some local fare.
And the best part of all of this? You can connect to the free WiFi at Strahan Village and send a photo to your friends and family for the ultimate bragging rights!
